Roger Federer announces his retirement from professional tennis and will end career at Laver Cup in London
The i says Roger Federer has called his decision to retire from professional tennis after next week’s Laver Cup in London a “bittersweet” one but says his body has sent him a “clear message” in recent months that he cannot go on.
The 41-year-old has not played competitively since Wimbledon last year, where he was beaten by Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, losing the third set 6-0 in a one-sided affair.
He has since had further surgery on his troublesome knee but was hoping to play October’s Swiss Indoors in his hometown of Basel, with some suggesting that could be his last tournament.
