September is almost over, and it’s been a busy month for UK high street closures as hundreds of shops and restaurants shut their doors for good.

The beginning of the month saw the closure of Foreways, a chain of corner shops, followed by over a dozen former WH Smith shops – now known as TG Jones.

Hundreds of restaurants also closed, most owned by Premier Inn operator Whitbread. This sadly included Brewers Fayre, Beefeater, and several other pub and bar chains.

All September shop closures

TG Jones

Almost 20 TG Jones shops, formerly known as WH Smith, closed this month as part of restructuring plans to stop the chain from falling into administration.

Modella Capital, the owner behind TG Jones and other shops like Hobbycraft, confirmed that 150 locations of the stationery and bookshop chain will close.

A total of 19 have been confirmed so far, 11 of which have already shut:

• Bath: September 1
• Redcar, North Yorkshire: September 5
• Redhill, Surrey: September 5
• Market Harborough, Leicestershire: September 12
• Uckfield, East Sussex: September 12
• Cambridge: September 14
• Swindon: September 15
• Helston, Cornwall: September 16
• Deal, Kent: September 19
• Basildon, Essex: September 21
• Rustington, West Sussex: September 23

The remaining eight TG Jones shops marked for closure this month will shut down as follows:

• Clevedon, North Somerset: September 26
• Greenford, London: September 26
• Kenilworth, Warwickshire: September 26
• Southend-on-Sea, Essex: September 26
• Exmouth, Devon: September 28
• Frome, Somerset: September 30
• Cardigan, Wales: Unconfirmed
• Wells, Somerset: Unconfirmed

Foreways

A small chain of mini-supermarkets and corner shops known as Foreways also closed five branches in Carlisle, Cumbria, after operating under the Premier group for nearly 40 years.

The shops that closed were located on:

• Wigton Road, CA2 7AY
• Bedford Road, CA2 5QE
• Blackwell Road, CA2 4RS
• Newlaithes Avenue, CA2 6PP
• Warwick Road, CA1 2BX

Wynsors

Wynsors, formerly known as Wynsors World of Shoes, has this month announced the closure of 17 shops across the UK, with closing-down sales launched across all affected stores.

The shops announced to close, although no official date has been confirmed, include:

• Bacup
• Birkenhead
• Bootle
• Bolton
• Bury
• Burnley
• Crewe
• Fleetwood
• Gateshead
• Hanley
• Leeds
• Oldham
• Rochdale
• Salford
• Sheffield
• Sunderland
• Wakefield

According to The Sun, the retail chain issued a statement, reading: ‘It’s with sadness that we announce that certain Wynsors stores will be closing their doors.

‘We’d like to say a huge thank you to all of our customers who have shopped with us and supported the store over the years. Your support has meant so much to the whole team.’

Which restaurants have closed this month?

Over 260 restaurants, bars and pub chains closed this month, all operated by Whitbread, the owner of Premier Inn.

The closures were confirmed at the beginning of the month as the company pivots to replace all standalone restaurant chains with an ‘integrated food and beverage offer’.
