Iran denies involvement in drone strike that killed three US soldiers
Iran has denied it was involved in the drone attack at a US base in Jordan, which killed three American troops and injured 34 other people.
The US base is near the Syrian border. US President Joe Biden blamed “Iran-backed militant groups” who, he says, are operating in Syria and Iraq.
Biden told a crowd at a campaign event in South Carolina on Sunday that “we shall respond,” prompting fears of another US-led war in the Middle East.
Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, has called the accusations “baseless” and says they are part of a “conspiracy… to drag America into the conflict.”
It’s the first time strikes in the region have killed US soldiers since the violence began in the Middle East – following the October 7 attacks.
US media reports the attack was on Tower 22, in north-east Jordan.
It has sparked fears of an escalation in the conflict in the region and whether it could unfold into a wider global conflict.
