US and Israeli Airstrikes Lead to High Casualties and Regional Tensions in the Gulf
An airstrike reportedly hitting a girls’ elementary school in southern Iran has led to more than 160 reported casualties, according to Iranian state media, although these figures are yet to be independently verified. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted that the airstrike was not conducted deliberately and stated that an investigation would take place.
Meanwhile, Iran has initiated retaliatory attacks following US and Israeli coordinated airstrikes, which commenced last weekend. The situation remains fluid as both the United States and Israel prepare for a potentially extended military campaign.
What we know on day four of US-Israeli attacks on Iran
United States Secretary of State addresses school airstrike ambiguity
IRAN/ISRAEL – The United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said an airstrike that reportedly hit a girls’ elementary school in southern Iran was not carried out deliberately, after Iranian state media reported that more than 160 people were killed on the first day of US and Israeli attacks.
Rubio added that the “Department of War” would investigate the strike, emphasising that the United States would not target a school deliberately.
Iran retaliates amid escalating conflict following airstrikes
IRAN/USA – The United States and Israel launched coordinated airstrikes against Iran last weekend.
The conflict has intensified with Iran carrying out retaliatory attacks, and more than 160 casualties have been reported following the strikes.
Israeli military prepares for potential further escalation
ESCALATION – The Israeli military has also outlined dozens of potential targets in Lebanon amid fears of further regional escalation.
The situation remains tense as both sides assess the implications of the ongoing military operations.
Trump warns of extended operations in Iran conflict
US IN FOR THE LONG HAUL – United States President Donald Trump has said the operation could continue for several weeks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated that the conflict may require a prolonged effort, though not extending into years.
Iranian Supreme Leader’s death marks turning point in conflict
TURNING POINT – Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed during the opening phase of the campaign. The loss of a key leader may significantly impact Iran’s response and strategy moving forward.
Israel took a beating – Israel has media blackout on free journalism, no agency is allowed to report on damage in Israel without Israeli approval. However, videos from the borders of Jordan show the extensive level of the damage and analysts from Red Cross estimate the death toll to have passed 500. The Israeli military has confirmed that it has identified incoming missiles launched from Iran, but officially not confirmed the damage reports.
Iran Bombed UAE – Tehran is continuously carrying out raids against US military and strategic assets located throughout the Gulf region.
Iran bombed Saudi – The US Embassy in Riyadh was hit by at least two drone attacks, causing a limited fire. The US Embassy is closed on Tuesday, and all routine and emergency services have been cancelled.
In the coming 48–72 hours, observers will monitor the responses from Iran and Israel as tensions continue to escalate.
US Death toll: Six US service members have been killed and 18 injured. Trump said the US will retaliate “soon” for the attack, though he does not believe “boots on the ground” may be necessary. This figure does not include the deaths and injuries form teh attacks on US Embassy and asset locations, which the DOD does not include.
